We thought some of you may be interested in learning a few basic Thai phrases in case you ever go to Thailand, meet a Thai person, or want to impress the Thai server at your local Thai restraint. Hey, it never hurts to have a few extra languages floating around in your head. So here are a few commonly used snippets that you can start with:
Note: Men say the particle “krup” and women “ka” wherever they appear. For all you Spanish speakers out there if you add a little tongue roll where you see an “r” it will add to the effect.
Sawadee krup / ka [A basic greeting, i.e. hello or good-bye]
Sabai dee mai krup / ka? [How are you doing?]
Sabai dee krup / ka. [I am well]
Koon la krup / ka ? [And you?]
Kop koon krup / ka [Thank-you]
There, now you can have about anyone believing you’re fluent in Thai for at least 10 seconds. That is if you can learn the five linguistic tones and how to use them properly. We will save those for the next lesson.
